Google Assistant, introduced in 2016, was a milestone for virtual assistant technology. However, Google realized that, while its assistant was competent, many users longed for a company that could optimize their daily tasks. Gemini, developed from scratch, offers advanced language understanding and reasoning capabilities, promising more precise and personalized deliveries.
In a blog post on Google’s official blog, the company stated that Google Assistant will be retired so that Gemini becomes the only assistant option, enabling support “only possible with the power of AI.”
“Millions of people have already switched from Google Assistant to Gemini and have reported how the new AI-based features have been helpful in their daily lives,” says Google. The company plans to update more and more mobile devices from Google Assistant to Gemini in the coming months. Later on, the classic version of Google Assistant will no longer be accessible on mobile devices and cannot be downloaded from app stores.
Google emphasizes that an assistant must be contextually aware and exceptionally helpful. According to the company, Google Assistant may not meet that challenge. The transition to Gemini is not abrupt; millions have already started enjoying the new assistant, receiving positive feedback that has motivated the company to expand this experience to even more users.
Additionally, there will be updates for other devices such as tablets, cars, and watches, and the Gemini-powered experiences will also reach home devices. However, devices that do not meet the minimum requirements (at least 2 GB of RAM and Android 10 or higher) will continue to have access to Google Assistant.

Since the introduction of the Gemini app last year, Google has been improving its functionalities, incorporating features that have been well-received by Google Assistant users. This evolution should make the transition between assistants easier.
With this change, Google seeks not only to modernize its digital assistant offering but also to provide users with a more integrated and powerful experience.
