Many Android phone manufacturers ship their devices with Google Messages as the default messaging app. However, Samsung has always preferred to use its own messaging app. This is about to change as the company announced that they will adopt a new pre-loaded messaging app.

According to information released in the Samsung Members app and discovered by analyst Max Weinbach (via 9to5Google), Google Messages will now be the default app on Galaxy phones.
“Starting with the Flip 6, Fold 6 models, the Samsung Messages app will no longer come pre-loaded,” says a screenshot of the announcement. “Instead, Google Messages will provide a new and enhanced experience for expressing your emotions, making communication secure and fun.”
The notice also mentions that users will still be able to download Samsung Messages from the Galaxy Store but some features may not be available. There is no information yet on which functionalities will be affected.
Android expert and Android Authority contributor Mishaal Rahman noted that Samsung Messages is still the default app on Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 models sold in Canada and Europe. This suggests that the change only applies to devices in the United States for now.
The news comes just weeks after it was discovered that Google Messages compresses images sent via RCS. Our own tests showed that a 50MP and 6MB image is sent as a 3.1MP and 404KB photo with the “Send photos faster” option disabled. In comparison, Samsung Messages can send uncompressed images via RCS.
Fortunately, we have recently found evidence that Google is working on the ability to send much larger images via RCS in Google Messages. So, it seems that this significant issue will be resolved soon. However, it may have been preferable for Samsung to wait until this issue was resolved before abandoning their own messaging app as the default option.
It is worth noting that Samsung and Google are already working on satellite messaging communication, especially for emergency situations.
